2D Shapes
During the weeks 6-8 we looked at the following shapes: square, triangle, circle and rectangle. Most of the children were familiar with the heart and star shapes. Some knew a diamond shape. Seven shapes seem like a lot to remember for 3 year old second language speakers, but with lots of practice they did amazingly well!

Circle shape - let's make pancakes! Week 7
What is the best way to make the children learn something for a long time? Of course let them try something to eat! So we made the pancakes to help the children remember the name of the circle shape.
They looked at the whole process from the very beginning. So we beat 2 eggs. Can you see, the yolk looks like a circle, and so is the pink bowl...

Then we added some sugar and milk.
We sieved some flour in and added 2 tablespoons of oil. Everybody had a go at mixing the dough. Finally it was ready. Can you notice how interested the children are?
Next step- frying the pancakes. Children looked at the round shape of the pancakes in the frying pan (remember that we were learning the circle shape!) There was a lot of surprise to see how the dough was changing the colour and the texture when frying. Kids were alowed to play while the pancakes were frying.
Pancakes are ready!
At last the pancakes were ready to eat. 'What shape are the pancakes?' By this time everybody remembered the answer - 'Circle!' The pancakes were a little too big so we cut them in half. With some strawberry jam - delicious!
Painting the shapes - Week 8
In Art we painted the shapes in different colours. This activity took place in the afternoon, so you can see some children still having a nap in the background. They all joined in later on.
Here are our shapes on the class display.
Can we make our own shapes? Week 8
In this activity the children had to use their knowledge of shapes to make their own using the geoboards and elastic bands. It appeared to be a little difficult but some of the children managed to make triangles and squares. They were not disappointed at all and just had a play with it. Ms. Tessa made a funny smiling face which everybody liked!
