L A D Y B U G S (Term 3, Week 8)
This week we started the topic on Minibeasts in Nursery. We read 'The Bad-Tempered Caterpillar' story by Eric Carle. The children looked at the ladybug's body, at what it eats and what it can do. The ladybug in the story meets many different animals that we compared by the size.

The story also gave us an opportunity to learn how to tell time by the hour. The children made their own clocks out of card and used them to show the times that the Bad-Tempered Ladybug met different animals. We also talked about different times the children do their everyday activities.
As the children were learning how to tell the time, we also looked at the Hickory Dickory Dock nursery rhyme and song.
In Maths we also used the ladybug spots to help the children with their counting to 10 and to 20.
Every time the ladybug met a new animal, he wanted to fight. We brainstormed the ideas why he was so grouchy. Perhaps he was hungry? Tired? Sad? Then the children were invited to think about what makes them angry. They came up with the following ideas: I feel angry when somebody pushes me. I feel angry when other children do not share their toys. I feel angry or sad when nobody wants to play with me. Then we spoke about the things that we can do to make other people happy. 'We can share our toys. We can play together. We can smile and look friendly. We can be careful not to push other people by accident.'
The children drew their pictures to illustrate their ideas. We pasted them onto our own giant class ladybug.
