Walking, not running, Week 4
Trying to get the children to walk to the canteen is the hardest part of my day. Once they walk out the classroom door, the fresh air makes them feel so excited, they want to RUN! They simply don't understand why should they be walking in a boring line when there is so much more fun in running. Before we leave the classroom for lunch we agree that we should stay together. "Are we going to run?" "No!" "Are we going to walk?" Children with earnest expressions in their eyes, "Yes!" "Will you get a sticker if you run?" "No." "Will you get a sticker if you walk?" With excitement, "Yes!!!" Three seconds after leaving the classroom it takes one child to start running to set off the rest. For the kids, as desirable as having a sticker might seem, it's not enough to make them walk!.. Yet!
To show them an example of a well organized walk to the canteen we asked Year 1 students to take the Nursery children with them. Year 1 students are still learning many things about behaviour at school and it was part of their learning experience to show the Nursery class how to walk nicely. See the photos below how perfect they were in helping the Nursery children walk. Did it work on the day? Absolutely! Do the Nursery students walk to the canteen now? You guess! =)
