Colour Magic with Dr. How - Term 2, Week 4
Dr. How is our Chemistry teacher in secondary school. He kindly agreed to demonstrate an exciting experiment showing how different colours mix into a new one. It was really exciting for the children just to be in the 'big children's' Science Lab! But to be able to observe the MAGIC (!) was absolutely thrilling! Dr. How taught me how the magic works and let me lead the 'show' but he was there all the time to supervise the process. We started by letting the children watch a short video showing what was foam and bubbles.
Then we showed the children how we mixed some baking soda with a little bit of liquid detergent. We put the mixture into a test tube. After that we asked the children what colour we would get if we mixed blue and yellow? Some of them remembered from our previous lessons and shouted 'Green!' We added blue and yellow food colouring into the mixture and stepped aside to let Dr. How add some acid. And that was when the magic began! Dr. How closed the glass screen and let the children come closer to observe the green bubbles almost jumping out from the test tube! There were lots of 'Wows!' going round the class and no wonder, it was really exciting! So the blue and yellow did change into green!
We repeated the process mixing pink and yellow that apparently change into orange! A pretty shade of orange reminded of orange juice and lemonade. The orange bubbles kept coming from the test tube when we had to leave the lab. Big thank you to Dr. How for taking time out of his busy schedule to host the Nursery class in the Science Lab!
