'We're Going on Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen
During Book Week each class chose one story that they looked at for the whole week. In Nursery we read the famous ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ story by Michael Rosen. It is a fun
story that children can learn a lot of new things from. Some of the concepts in the story are the five senses,
descriptive words, rhythm and repeating pattern, directions and basic geography,
sequencing and order, and even facing fears. Not only that, but Bear Hunt
encourages physical activity and creativity.
Introducing the story
Story settings
The students looked at the six settings in the story that the family of the four children and the father went through. We looked at how they crossed a field of tall, wavy grass
("Swishy swashy!"), waded through a deep, cold river ("Splash
splosh!"), struggled through thick oozy mud ("Squelch squerch!"),
found their way through a big, dark forest ("Stumble trip!"), fought through a swirling whirling snowstorm ("Hoooo woooo!"), and entered a narrow,
gloomy cave.
The children also had to put the story settings in the correct sequence based on the plot.

Prepositions in, under, through
Below is my PPT based on the story. It practices the prepositions from the story (in, under, through). Hope you like it!

Role play with the Michael Rosen's song
We're Going on a Bear Hunt has got rhythm and lots of repetition, which helps the children to remember the story better. We sang the story and added lots of arm and hand movements as suggested in the video by Michael Rosen himself. (See the video below.)

Story book cover on the classroom door
During Book Week each primary class decorated their classroom door as the story book cover. We decided to create a new version of the book cover. First the students drew their self portraits for the new characters in the story.
Then they coloured in and drew some flowers and butterflies.
Ms. Tessa cut out a big bear and some grass out of paper, then we put all the bits and pieces together and here is the finished book cover on our classroom door!
Fancy dress day
On Friday all the parents of the primary school students were invited to watch a special Book Week assembly and to take part in the book related activities in their children's classes. Many students and teachers came back to school dressed up as book characters. In the assembly Mr. Findlay and Ms.Procure presented some little gifts to the book character costume winners. In Nursery it was a muscular Super Man Luis!
Art and craft with parents
After the assembly the children showed their parents the Bear Hunt story role play. Then each parent and their child were given a task to create one setting from the story using some craft and art supplies from our class. To recycle we used the card cut out from cereal boxes. In a matter of half an hour before the end of the lesson, parents and their children painted, cut and glued their pieces together and ended up with absolutely stunning pictures! These will be used in our Bear Hunt story map on one of the classroom displays. Thank you again to all the parents and grandparents for your support. Without you this day would not be as special!
Here are the finished settings from the Bear Hunt story. Click on the pictures to see who they were made by.
