Nursery Class- Recent Issues
(Discussed during the parents' meeting on Friday 22 March 2013)
1. Behaviour issues
· Recently there have been some occasions when the old Nursery students were rather unkind towards the new ones. Please talk to your child about the importance of being nice to all the children in class, with disregard whether they are old or new. It would be better if you found an opportunity to talk to your child about this issue over the time in a discrete manner, through reading stories or watching some animation movies, etc. Although we cannot force them to like someone, we can teach them how to act to others in a friendly way.
· Recently students tend to run inside the building during play times using going to the bathroom or drinking water as an excuse. Then they try to run upstairs and jump down from the top steps. Please remind your children that they are not allowed to be in the classroom without supervision and also that they are not allowed to run along the corridors, go upstairs, etc. under any circumstances.
· Please talk to your child about cafeteria manners by asking these or similar questions:
Is it good to run around in the cafeteria?
Can you make noise in the cafeteria by banging your tray with a fork or a spoon?
Can you shout in the cafeteria?
Can you shout if you want to attract attention of someone you know?
Do you walk around while you are eating or do you eat sitting at the table?
Do you clean up the mess you created at the table before you leave or just run away to the playground?
Do you wait for the other students to finish their lunch or run outside the minute you finished your food?
Do you speak with your mouth full?
Please don’t ask these questions all in one go but rather ask some and talk about them with your child ensuring that they understand good manners at the cafeteria.
2. New behavior chart in the School Diary
As a result of some behavior issues mentioned above I am going to start a new reward/consequences chart in class. The students will now have a weekly table in their diaries where their behavior for the day will be marked by me in the shape of different colour smilies. Please read more about it here.
3. School Diary
Please sign your child’s diary every night to indicate that you read my daily notes.
4. Polluted days
The days with high pollution levels when the children had to stay indoors proved to create serious safety issues. Staying in ONE ROOM FOR THE ENTIRE DAY makes the children restless, irritable, prone to fighting and crying, etc. Moreover the air in the classroom becomes stuffy and unhealthy for breathing as we cannot leave the inside door open at any time for safety issues. As an alternative to this critical situation the school is looking at the possibility of buying face masks with the high protection level and a filter for easier breathing for all the students at school. The photos of the masks and detailed information about them can be obtained on the following websites.

Wearing these masks will give your child an opportunity to be outdoors during morning and afternoon breaks as well as part of lunch break and consequently reduce the risk of being hit or kicked in an overcrowded room full of restless children. This also will help to ensure that the children are ready to learn during the next lesson after releasing their pent up energy.
5. Computer – mouse control
Please spend at least 5 minutes a day teaching your child how to control and click the computer mouse. During our 3rd term students will be using our primary ICT Lab and playing some educational English, Maths and Science games. Although Ms. Tessa and I will be helping the children in class, we will not be able to help everybody at once and an absolute lack of the mouse control skill can end up with your child being frustrated during the sessions that should be educational and fun.
