My Observations
Walking, not running...Week 4
Trying to get the children to walk to the canteen is the hardest part of my day. Once they walk out the classroom door they get overexcited in the outside air which makes them want to RUN! They are puzzled why they should walk in a boring line when there is so much more fun in running. Before we leave the classroom for lunch we agree that we should stay together. "Are we going to run?" "No!" "Are we going to walk?" Children with earnest expressions in their eyes, "Yes!" "Will you get a sticker if you run?" "No." "Will you get a sticker if you walk?" With excitement, "Yes!!!" Three seconds after leaving the classroom it takes one child to start running to set off the rest. For the kids, as desirable as having a sticker might seem, it's not enough to make them walk!.. Yet!
To show them an example of a well organized walk to the canteen we asked Year 1 students to take the Nursery children with them. Year 1 students are still learning many things about behaviour at school and it was part of their learning experience to show the Nursery class how to walk nicely. See the photos below how perfect they were in helping the Nursery children walk. Did it work on the day? Absolutely! Do the Nursery students walk to the canteen now? You guess! =)

What I noticed about 3 year olds - September 2012
Here is what I noticed about my 3 year old students at the end of September 2012:
They love running, they don't like walking.
They love to be first in everything they do.
They love reward stickers.
They are very interested in what is happening in the school corridor.
They love colourfull things.
They love playing with pretend food, dishes, etc and toy cars.
They love construction toys but not so much building blocks.
They love listening to stories again and again.
They love to paint.
They LOVE outside play times.
They love snack times but not so much lunch times.
Most of the children like to eat eggs and yoghurt for lunch.
They love small toys.
Every day they are over excited when it is "Mama-time"!

What we have learned in September, 2012
4 weeks at school, time to look back and reflect on what kind of learning took place in the Nursery class. I am happy that I got to know your children better and they seem to warm up to me and Ms. Tessa.
Here is where I can see some noticeable progress:
The children are familiar with the class routines and know what is to be expected throughout the day most of the time.
They are getting better at focusing their attention during the 'circle time'. There is still lots of movement and crawling around going on but at least for a short time everybody sits and listens.
It's great to see that children are trying to say 'please' and 'thank you' when they ask for things.
They can name main body parts and identify four feelings: happy, sad, angry and scared.
They can name some or most of the basic colours. They have an idea of a rainbow.
They can count to 5, some of them can count to 10.
My students LOVE songs and cartoons. They learned quite a few songs and already have their favourites. They can join in with the actions when they like the song.
Most of them can sort objects by colour or size.
They are getting more independent during pee-pee time and there were fewer wet accidents by the end of the month. Thank you to parents for your help with this! =)
