Our Favourite Stories, 2012-2013
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, Term 3
The children enjoyed reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar story by Eric Carle. This book provides lots of learning opportunities. We revised the names of the days of the week, healthy and unhealthy food and looked at the butterfly life cycle. There were lots of art and crft activities involved.
We watched a cartoon based on the story. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTc4MjI5OTE2.html
We also looked at the Hungry Caterpillar PPT.
The children looked closely at the butterfly life cycle. They arranged the pictures in the right order.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears Term 2, Week 3
Goldilocks is an enjoyable story that gives endless opportunities to compare sizes, weight, temperature and texture of different things. It also gives an opportunity to talk about rights and wrongs in the story. In Maths the children sorted big, small and medium size objects followed by sorting hard and soft objects. They also tried to compare heavy and light things. In Literacy they were given three pictures from the story that they had to sequence according to the story.

Share! by Anthea Simmons and George Birkett - Week 4
We read this book several times. The main characters, a big sister and her baby brother learn how to share their toys as the day goes by. A very useful book in the Nursery class where the children share but not so willingly at times. Every time the baby brother was doing something wrong in the story, the Nursery students shouted, 'No sticker! No sticker!' The illustrations are so cute and capture the readers interest all the time.
Sometimes I Bombaloo by Rachel Vail - Week 3
This lovely book gave us a chance to talk about our feelings. A nice little girl with good manners sometimes gets mad with her baby brother and turns into a 'Bombaloo'. The children all agreed that throwing toys, screaming and making angry faces is not a good thing to do. They were relieved to see how at the end the mother, the baby and the little girl gave each other a big hug end everyone was happy again.
The Gingerbread Man - Week 2
We read the Gingerbread Man story while we were looking at the parts of the body. Children enjoyed watching the PPT based on the story (see below) and tried to act it out. By the end of the week they were ready to join in with the Gingerbread Man song: 'Run, run, as fast as you can. You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man!' We did lots of art and craft work as follow up activities and of course making and eating real gingerbread man cookies was the highlight of the week!

Big Blue Fish and Small Colourful Fish - Week 1
In this story (author is unknown) the little fish are scared of the big blue fish, but all it wants to do is to invite them for a picnic.
It was fun acting out the story with the kids. They had to run away from me (I was a Big Blue Fish of course) and say, "No, no! Please don't eat me!" We revised the colours and counted the fish too.
You can download the story in PPT and look at it with your child at home. The story itself is written down at the bottom of the slides.
