Last week we started the topic of Water in Nursery. The children looked at the capacity of different containers, at the things that float and sink, at using water for washing up and of course at making soap bubbles! All of the above activities created lots of excitement in our classroom. It's amazing to see how the children never get tired of water related activities and always ask for more! Last week the children enjoyed the topic of Dinosaurs. They learned that dinosaurs lived long time ago. Most of them were huge but there were some small dinosaurs too. Some of them ate plants and some of them ate other animals. All of them laid eggs. The book called 'I'm a T-Rex' by Dennis Shealy helped us to find out more things about dinosaurs. In Art the children made some lovely dinosaur suncatchers that made our classroom look more cheerful. On one of the hot mornings the children went outside to do some water painting. This simple activity did not lead to producing a masterpiece in the end but it was really enjoyed by the children. It was good learning experience too. The children were excited about the changes in colour in everything they touched by their wet paintbrushes and also by the fact that the water evaporated so quick.
The story of the week was Elmer the Elephant by David McKee. The children liked the cheerful colourful elephant that made all the other elephants laugh. They were surprised that Elmer tried to paint himself into grey colour, so that he looked like other elephants, but they were happy to find out that in the end Elmer was back to his bright colourful patchwork look. The children also enjoyed some art and craft related to the story as well as the ICT activity. The plants that we planted in the little garden outside with Mr. Matt's help are growing really well. It's amazing how quickly they grow and how tall they are now. The children observed the plants closely on Friday and saw the bean pods that are almost ready to be harvested and eaten! There were many 'wows' when they saw them. The sunflowers are the tallest plants in the garden of course. There are also two different types of beans, potatoes and carrots growing. How tall will our plants grow by the end of June? On Friday Ms. Helen shared a traditional Chinese story of the Tadpoles Looking for Their Mum. We told the story in English and Chinese in turns and followed it up with the children acting it out. They really enjoyed the story and kept saying, "It's so funny!" It also gave the children an opportunity to find out what frogs' babies look like and how they transform into frogs. In Maths the children looked at how to tell the time by the hour. They enjoyed the Hickory Dickory Dock nursery rhyme and song. They also made their own clocks out of card and used them to show the times that the Bad-Tempered Ladybug met different animals. We also talked about different times the children do their everyday activities. |
